Whether you're a history buff, or you just want to learn more about the country of Iran, you'll find plenty of great books to read. Here's a list of some of the best books on Iran.

Her Eyes by Marjane Satrapi

Among the best books on Iran is the graphic memoir Persepolis by Iranian-born French illustrator Marjane Satrapi. It tells the story of a girl growing up in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. In her early childhood, Marjane struggles to find her identity and her place in the world. In her early teen years, she travels to other countries and learns how to live in a modern world.

The book also explores the effects of the regime on an individual's spirit. Marjane struggles to find her way in a society that often rejects her. It is a vivid depiction of daily life in Iran and the effects of the regime on the country.

The first volume of the graphic memoir, Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, is the story of Marjane Satrapi's childhood in Iran. Her family was part of the social movement of the Iranian revolution. They protested the new government of Ayatollah Khomeini. Khomeini was a fundamentalist Islamic leader who followed Quranic rules. The theocracy was predominantly followed by Shia Muslims. The regime was very violent.

The second volume of Persepolis, Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return, follows Marjane as she becomes a teenager. Her family suffers under an oppressive regime and she is sent to Europe for further studies. After four years, she returns to Iran.

She is kicked out of her apartment and ends up living on the street. Her family is not alone in this suffering. She encounters an Iranian woman who is perceived as an outsider.

Ahl-e Gharq by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi

Among the greatest writers of Persian literature, Mahmoud Dowlatabadi is perhaps the most important. His work transcends post-Islamic epic literature and transcends lyrical poesy. He is renowned for his intricate portrayal of social upheaval. His works are available in translation. He is also a leading member of the Tehran theater community. His Kelidar is a 10-volume, 3000-page saga about a Kurdish nomadic family.

Dowlatabadi was born in a small village in Khorasan, an arid northeastern province bordering Afghanistan. He was raised in a family of farmers. He worked in a shoe factory, as a cobbler, and as a cinema ticket taker. He also worked as a bicycle repairman. He studied at Columbia University. Dowlatabadi has been published in many languages. He is the recipient of the Jan Michalski Prize.

His work is also translated into many languages. His Kelidar, a 10-volume, 3000-page abridged version of his saga about a Kurdish family, is available in a German translation.

Land of the Turquoise Mountains: Journeys Across Iran by Cyrus Massoudi

Having traveled the length and breadth of Iran over the past few decades, I can attest to the fact that the Iranians are amongst the most hospitable people on the planet. Fortunately for us, our illustrious hosts have a penchant for letting us sample the hors d'oeurves of their pious occupants. And, it is from their humbles that I have been able to sample some of the country's best and most unorthodox cuisines. Of course, the most important challenge lies in retaining the tastiest morsels of a plethora of culinary delights for longer than a day or two. I am pleased to report that this has been a boon to me and my wife. I have even taken to consuming my fair share of the country's most delectable libations on my frequent nocturnal excursions.

Shahnameh by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi

Among Iran's most prominent contemporary novelists, Mahmoud Dowlatabadi is considered the literary son of Ferdowsi. His novel, The Colonel, depicts the ghost of a dead wife and reflects Iranian traumas from the past. He has also written a trilogy of Shahnameh stories.

The Shahnameh is an ancient Persian poem that provides an account of the prehistory of Iran. It teaches religious uprightness and patriotism, as well as love for family and a sense of kinship. It is based on the Karnamag-i Ardaxsir-i Pabagan, an epic written in the late Sassanid era.

It is considered the earliest epic written in the Persian language, and is a three-times longer than the Nibelungenlied. It has over 60,000 rhyming couplets. It is also known for its illustrations. It ends with the Arab conquest of Persia.

The Shahnameh has been translated into English by several scholars. A number of translations have taken a different approach to making the text accessible to readers. Some have focused on translation and others have concentrated on making the text more visual. Some have made the text more accessible by combining prose and poetry.

Shahnameh was translated into English in 1832 by James Atkinson. It has been domesticated by subsequent English translations, and it has been read in the West as a sort of exotic Persian epic. Unlike Homer's Iliad, the Shahnameh is not chronological. It teaches a variety of moral virtues, including worship of one God, love of family, and helping the poor.

Masih Alinejad's "My Stealthy Freedom" by Kamin Mohammadi

Having one of the world's most pliable weathermen as your ephemeral of choice is one thing, but getting him to say the name of the gods in a speech is another. Its an understated affair in the present tense and an even less fortuitous one. Fortunately, a touch of yippee has a way of making the best of the worst of the best. apologies to the rest of us. Its a small club, but one that you'd be hard pressed to crack, if you were that unlucky. One of the many perks is a free ride in the big rig.
